About NazoMap
NazoMap (ナゾマップ, “map of mysteries”) collects legends and eyewitness accounts of cryptids (UMA), urban legends, ancient civilizations, UFOs, strange phenomena and yokai, and organizes them as an illustrated card encyclopedia and a map of legend sites.
Mysterious stories tend to appear in the news and quickly disappear. We record them one entry at a time, with their names, alternative names, era, place of origin and sources, so that they remain easy to look up later.
The site was created in Japanese, and we are translating entries into English one by one. The English edition currently includes the encyclopedia and category pages; the legend map, rankings, timeline and other features are available in the Japanese edition.
Editorial policy
- Legends and sightings are presented as things that “are said” or “have been reported,” not as established facts.
- Wherever possible, we cite books, newspapers, local government materials and other sources.
- We do not list haunted spots, abandoned buildings, private property, or the sites of crimes and accidents.
- If you find an error, please let us know through the contact form. We will check it and make corrections.
