Antoon Cornelis Oudemans was a Dutch zoologist who made major contributions to the study of mites.
In his massive 1892 book The Great Sea-Serpent, he analyzed hundreds of sea serpent sightings collected from around the world and proposed that the creature was an unknown giant long-necked relative of the seals. It is known as a pioneering attempt to study the sea serpent scientifically.
