Friedrich de la Motte Fouque was a German Romantic writer who won popularity with works based on chivalric romances and legends.
His 1811 novel Undine depicts the tragic love of a water spirit who marries a human knight in order to gain a soul, and it was widely read across Europe. This work, which turned the water spirit described by Paracelsus into a story, made the name undine widely known.
