George Shaw was an English naturalist who served as a keeper in the natural history department of the British Museum.
In 1799 he gave a scientific description of the platypus specimen that had arrived from Australia. Its appearance was so strange that Shaw himself at first suspected a taxidermist had sewn on a duck’s bill, and is said to have searched for stitches.
