Heinrich Heine was a German poet and journalist. Known for lyric poems about love and nature, many of his poems were set to music as songs by Schubert, Schumann and others.
His 1824 poem “Die Lorelei” describes boatmen who, entranced by a maiden singing and combing her golden hair on a rock above the Rhine, crash into the rocks and sink. It was later set to music by Silcher and spread the legend of the Lorelei around the world.
