James Cook was a British naval officer and explorer, known as Captain Cook. On three voyages in the Pacific he explored the east coast of Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and more, leaving precise charts.
On his second voyage, from 1772 to 1775, he entered the Antarctic Circle and surveyed the southern seas widely, confirming that the huge southern continent drawn on the maps of the time (Megallanica) did not exist.
