What is the skunk ape?

The skunk ape is a hominid-type unidentified creature said to live in the wetlands of Florida in the southeastern United States, such as the Everglades. It is considered a relative of Bigfoot, but because it gives off a powerful skunk-like stench, it came to be called the “skunk ape.”

Sightings and photos

The skunk ape is said to be about 2 m tall and covered in reddish-brown or dark hair. Many sightings report seeing a large ape-man in Florida’s swamps and forests along with a foul smell. In 2000, photos said to show an unidentified large creature that appeared in someone’s backyard were sent anonymously to a local sheriff’s office, causing a stir.

What is the skunk ape really?

Theories include mistaken bears, or large apes such as orangutans that escaped or were abandoned. Some also suggest the photos showed a person in a costume or an animal photographed at night and misidentified.
