Abraham Ortelius was a cartographer active in Antwerp in Flanders (today’s Belgium).
His Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the World), published in 1570, is considered the first modern atlas, collecting maps in a uniform format in one volume. Its world map shows a huge “unknown southern continent” covering much of the Southern Hemisphere, and it is a key source preserving the image of Megallanica.
