Ctesias

  • Physician and historian
  • Ancient Greece
  • 5th–4th century BC

Ctesias was an ancient Greek physician and historian. He served at the court of the Persian king Artaxerxes II as his physician and wrote the Persica and the Indica based on what he saw and heard there.

The Indica records that India had wild asses with a single horn on their foreheads, and that drinking from a cup made of the horn protected against poison and disease. This is considered one of the oldest written records of the unicorn. Because he never actually visited India, his account contains many inaccurate stories based on hearsay.
