Joseph Jacobs was an Australian-born folklorist and historian who worked in Britain. He collected folktales from around Britain and retold them in forms easy for children to read.
His English Fairy Tales (1890) includes “Jack and the Beanstalk” and “The Three Little Pigs.” The sequel, More English Fairy Tales (1894), includes the Lincolnshire folktale of Yallery Brown, which made this fairy widely known.
