Roy Chapman Andrews was an American explorer and naturalist who also served as director of the American Museum of Natural History.
In the 1920s he led large-scale expeditions in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia, achieving major results such as the world’s first discovery of fossil dinosaur eggs. During these expeditions he heard from Mongolians about the “olgoi-khorkhoi,” a giant venomous worm living in the desert, and recorded it in his book. This was how the Mongolian death worm became known in the West. He is also said to be one of the models for the hero of the Indiana Jones films.
