What are alien big cats?

Alien big cats (ABCs) are a phenomenon in which large cats like leopards, pumas or black panthers are sighted in regions where they should not live. “Alien” here does not mean extraterrestrial but “foreign” or “from elsewhere.” Sightings are especially common in Britain, with many reports from around the country.

The Beast of Bodmin Moor

The most famous is the “Beast of Bodmin Moor,” a large black cat seen on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall in southwestern England. In the 1980s and 1990s, sightings came one after another along with attacks on sheep and other livestock, and in 1995 the British government carried out an investigation, but found no solid evidence of a big cat.

What are alien big cats really?

In 1976, Britain passed a law regulating the keeping of dangerous wild animals. One theory is that pumas, leopards and other cats previously kept as pets were released into the wild by their owners. There have in fact been cases of escaped big cats being captured. On the other hand, many sightings are thought to be large domestic cats, dogs or foxes mistaken for something else.
