What is the Owlman?

The Owlman is an owl-like monster sighted in 1976 in Mawnan, a small village in Cornwall in southwestern England. It was said to be as big as a human, covered in gray feathers, with pointed ears, glowing red eyes and sharp talons.

The Mawnan sightings

The first sighting is said to have been in the spring of 1976, when girls playing near the village church saw a giant owl-like monster flying over the church tower and fled home in terror. Several more sightings of a similar monster in the woods near the church were reported that summer and through the late 1970s.

What is the Owlman really?

One theory is that the Owlman was an eagle owl, a large owl, that escaped from captivity. Others point out that a person involved in the commotion was known as a prankster, suggesting the story may have been exaggerated or made up. It is a winged humanoid cryptid often compared with America’s Mothman.
