Hanno was a navigator of Carthage, a city-state in ancient North Africa.
Around the 5th century BC he is said to have led a large fleet south along the west coast of Africa, and an account of the voyage survives in Greek translation. At its end is a story of trying to capture hairy wild people called “Gorillai” met on an island; when a new species of ape was found in 1847, it was named gorilla after this word.
