James Churchward was a writer born in England who moved to the United States. He also ran a business in steel products as an engineer.
In a series of books beginning with The Lost Continent of Mu (1926), he claimed that the continent of Mu, home of humanity’s oldest civilization, once lay in the Pacific and sank about 12,000 years ago. He said he had deciphered ancient clay tablets shown to him at a temple in India in his youth, but the tablets have never been confirmed to exist. He made the name of Mu known around the world.
