A continent sunk in the Pacific

Mu is a legendary continent said to have existed in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, home to humanity’s oldest advanced civilization, until it sank into the sea in a great cataclysm about 12,000 years ago.

Where the name “Mu” comes from

The name “Mu” comes from a reading made by 19th-century researchers attempting to decipher a Maya codex. That decipherment is now considered mistaken, but the name spread as that of a lost continent.

James Churchward’s books

Mu was made famous around the world by a series of books by James Churchward. He described the civilization of Mu based on clay tablets he said he had seen at a temple in India, but the existence of those tablets has never been confirmed. Geological surveys of the ocean floor have found no evidence of a continent sinking in the Pacific, and the idea is rejected by science. Some have linked Mu with the moai of Easter Island and the Yonaguni Monument.
