John Stuart Mill was a British philosopher and economist. He is known for On Liberty (1859), which argued for the importance of individual freedom, and was also famous for advocating women’s suffrage early on. He served as a member of the House of Commons from 1865 to 1868.
In an 1868 speech to Parliament criticizing the government’s Irish policy, he used the word “dystopia,” meaning the opposite of utopia. This is known as an early use of the word dystopia.
