Jules Verne was a French novelist who wrote many adventure novels incorporating the latest scientific knowledge of his time, and is called one of the “fathers of science fiction.” His best-known works include Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas, Around the World in Eighty Days and From the Earth to the Moon.
Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) depicts an adventure descending into the Earth through the crater of an Icelandic volcano, encountering an underground sea and ancient creatures. It is still read today as a work that spread images of the hollow Earth and the underworld.
