Takeuchi Kiyomaro

  • Religious leader
  • Japan
  • 1875–1965

Takeuchi Kiyomaro was a religious leader who headed the Koso Kotaijingu (Amatsukyo) group in Ibaraki Prefecture.

In 1928 he made public ancient documents said to have been handed down in his family, the so-called Takeuchi Documents. Their claims of super-ancient dynasties before Emperor Jimmu and of Moses and Christ coming to Japan drew attention, but before the war he was tried for lese-majesty and other charges (he was acquitted). The “Tomb of Christ” in Shingo, Aomori Prefecture, was also “discovered” based on the Takeuchi Documents.
