Emperor Toba was the 74th emperor of Japan. After abdicating, he ruled for many years as retired emperor.
Legend says that Tamamo-no-Mae, the peerless beauty who served him, was really the nine-tailed fox. When he fell ill with a mysterious sickness, an onmyoji unmasked Tamamo-no-Mae; the fox fled to the plain of Nasu, where it was killed and turned into the Killing Stone.
