What is kunekune?

Kunekune is an apparition said to appear far away in rice fields or on riverbanks: a thin, white, human-like shape twisting and wriggling. It is harmless to look at from a distance, but anyone who comes to “understand” what it is will lose their sanity.

Origins and spread

Accounts of kunekune were posted to occult threads on internet message boards from the early 2000s and spread from there. The best-known story tells of two brothers in the countryside who spot a white wriggling thing in a rice field on a hot summer day; the older brother looks at it through binoculars and goes mad.

What is kunekune really?

The story always ends without revealing what the thing is, and that fear of seeing something you should not see stirs readers’ imaginations. Some suggest it was a scarecrow, a plastic sheet or a heat haze; others link it to folk beliefs about rice-field gods or water spirits.
