What is the yowie?
The yowie is a large hominid-type unidentified creature said to live in the mountains and forests of eastern Australia, such as the Blue Mountains. Covered in hair and walking on two legs, it is said to reach 2–3 m in height. It can be called the Australian version of North America’s Bigfoot.
Aboriginal folklore and sightings
Hairy giants like the yowie have long been told of in the folklore of Australia’s Aboriginal peoples. When European settlers moved inland in the 19th century, they too began reporting sightings of large ape-men in the forests, and many reports have come in up to the present day.
What is the yowie really?
Australia has no native monkeys or apes. So the yowie is thought to be a kangaroo standing on its hind legs, feral animals mistaken for something else, or Aboriginal folklore that changed shape as it spread among settlers.
