John Dee

  • Mathematician and astrologer
  • United Kingdom
  • 1527 – c. 1608

John Dee was an English mathematician, astronomer and astrologer who served Elizabeth I. Also learned in navigation and geography, he is said to have chosen the date of the queen’s coronation by astrology. His house at Mortlake near London held one of the largest libraries in England at the time.

In his later years he turned to mysticism and repeatedly held sessions to communicate with angels through the medium Edward Kelley, keeping records of them. He is also known for asking the angels about the mysteries of the Book of Soyga. He traveled to Bohemia and met Emperor Rudolf II, and one theory holds that it was Dee who sold the Voynich Manuscript to the emperor.
