People in the Legends

Rudolf II

  • Holy Roman Emperor
  • Austria
  • 1552–1612

Rudolf II was a Habsburg Holy Roman Emperor (reigned 1576–1612). He made Prague his capital and is known for being more absorbed in art, learning and mysticism than in politics. He invited the astronomers Tycho Brahe and Kepler to his court and supported many alchemists and astrologers, and Prague came to be called a “city of magic.”

He owned a vast collection of rare artworks, natural objects and machines (a cabinet of curiosities), which included the giant Codex Gigas. Tradition also says he bought the Voynich Manuscript for 600 ducats.

Voynich Manuscript

A 15th-century manuscript filled with writing no one can read and strange illustrations of plants that do not exist and naked women. Discovered by the book dealer Wilfrid Voynich in 1912, it remains undeciphered despite theories of a cipher, an artificial language or a hoax.

Codex Gigas

One of the largest medieval manuscripts in the world, made at a monastery in Bohemia (today's Czech Republic) in the early 13th century. It weighs about 75 kg. Because it contains a large picture of the devil, it is called the "Devil's Bible," and a legend says a monk wrote it in one night with the devil's help.
