Edward Kelley was a 16th-century English alchemist and medium. As John Dee‘s partner, he gazed into a crystal ball and relayed the words of angels, having Dee write down “Enochian,” said to be the language of angels.
After traveling to Bohemia with Dee, he was taken into the service of Emperor Rudolf II as an alchemist who could turn base metals into gold, but he was later imprisoned, partly for failing to produce the promised gold, and is said to have died in prison. One theory holds that the Voynich Manuscript is a fake that Kelley made to sell to the emperor.
