What is the mahamba?
The mahamba is a giant crocodile cryptid (unidentified creature) said to live in the swamps and rivers spread across the rainforests of the Congo in central Africa. It is said to reach 15 m in length, more than twice the size of the largest known crocodiles (the saltwater crocodile, about 6–7 m). Among local people, it is told of as a terrifying creature that swallows people, dugout canoe and all.
The Congo rainforest and cryptids
The wetlands where stories of the mahamba are told, such as the Likouala region of the Congo, are vast areas of rainforest and swamp that are hard for people to enter. Sightings of Mokele-mbembe, a long-necked dinosaur-like cryptid, are also told in the same region, and among cryptid fans it is known as “the last unexplored land where unknown creatures lurk.”
What is the mahamba really?
One theory holds that the mahamba is a surviving Sarcosuchus, a giant crocodile more than 10 m long that lived in the Cretaceous period. Fossils of Sarcosuchus have been found in the Sahara region of Africa, so it is certain that giant crocodiles lived in ancient Africa.
On the other hand, another view holds that it is more natural to think that real large crocodiles such as the Nile crocodile were described as far bigger than they really are because of fear. In any case, no photos or bones have been found that would serve as solid evidence.
