What is Migo?

Migo is an unidentified creature said to live in Lake Dakataua on the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea. With a long neck and a large body, it is sometimes said to be a surviving plesiosaur or mosasaur. It is also reported to be treated as a sacred being locally.

Filming by a Japanese TV program

Migo is a cryptid with deep ties to Japan, and Japanese investigations have been carried out since the 1970s. In 1994, a crew from a TBS program broadcast footage they said showed a large creature swimming in the lake, causing a sensation. Another program also claimed to have captured a mysterious shadow in 2008.

What is Migo really?

The British paleontologist Darren Naish examined the 1994 footage and concluded that it showed several saltwater crocodiles. The leading theory is that sightings are crocodiles living in the lake or animals swimming in a line mistaken for a single creature.
