The Cretaceous "Finger" Fossil

白亜紀の人間の指の化石

OOPArts

A stone shaped just like a human fingertip, said to have been found in Texas in the 1980s. Claimed to come from Cretaceous rock about 100 million years old, it was presented as evidence that dinosaurs and humans coexisted. It has been pointed out that its joints do not match a human finger, and the prevailing view is that it is a stone with a chance resemblance.

What is the Cretaceous finger fossil?

The Cretaceous human finger fossil is a stone shaped just like a human fingertip, said to have been found near Glen Rose, Texas, in the 1980s. About 5 cm long, it seems to have parts like a nail and wrinkles at the joint.

Glen Rose is a town known for fossil dinosaur footprints, and is also famous for the story of the Paluxy “man tracks”.

Evidence that dinosaurs and humans coexisted?

The stone is said to have been found in Cretaceous rock about 100 million years old. If it were really a fossil human finger, humans would have lived in the age of dinosaurs. It was promoted by supporters of creationism, who also claimed that when it was cut open, structures like bone and joints could be seen inside.

Is it really a fossil finger?

On the other hand, it has been pointed out that the stone lacks the full set of joints a human finger should have, and its shape does not match a human finger. Nature contains many stones shaped just like parts of living bodies, such as nodules formed by hardened minerals. No scholarly results have been published in peer-reviewed journals, and the rock layer it came from has not been confirmed.

None of the OOPArts said to show dinosaurs and humans coexisting is accepted by scientists. Others include the Meister print and the Ica stones. Famous OOPArts are listed on the OOPArts page.
